What are some of the different sources of light in this book?

How can the moon help us see? 

Why do we turn on lights when it is dark? 

 

Level 3: Strategic Thinking 

There are many different kinds of light in this book. What kinds of lights are around us? 

How does light help us? 

 

Level 4: Extended Thinking 

What would happen if we did not have any light in our classroom? What would happen if you did not have any light where you live? What would you do? 

Sometimes we want light around us. Sometimes we do not. When might you want it to be dark? 

How can you make a space dark when it is light outside?

Exploring with Light Table  

The teachers will work with students in the science center.  Teachers will model how to use and care for the light table. They will observe each student as they use the light table and ask higher order thinking questions about their experiences. Teachers and students will discuss what an X-ray is and what they are used for.

 

Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed:

PK.CKW.6 (Science): Acquires knowledge about the physical properties of the world.

Lessons and activities for the week:

 

Blocks- Students are invited to explore how they might use blocks and a flashlight to create shadow letters.  

 

Art- Black and White Art: After reading the book Round Trip by Ann Jonas, the teacher will provide black and white paper for children to use to create a picture. They can cut or rip the paper and use glue to assemble the art. the teacher will use vocabulary words such as straight and wavy to describe the lines that they make. 

 

Science- Students will be able to use the light table to look at x-rays and an assortment of translucent objects.   

 

Math- Students will be able to match shape manipulatives with their shadow.  

 

Library- Students are invited to read books about our theme, light.  

 

Writing- Letters with Holes: The children are going to use a hole punch to create letters on pieces of paper. The teacher will allow children to place the papers over the light table and explore the letters and light.
