Week of October 8, 2018

My Five senses

Goals for student understanding by the end of the unit:

•  There are five senses. They are smell, taste, touch, sight and hearing.
•  We use our senses to understand our bodies, learn what they need, and keep us safe.
•  We use our senses to learn about the people, places, objects, and environment around us.
•  We experience and interact with the world differently when our senses, such as vision or hearing, are impaired.

Lessons and activities for each center:

Blocks-Leaves: The teacher will cut out the leaf rubbings the children made in the art center and add, as well as tape. The teacher will encourage the children to build trees with blocks and tape on the leaves. She will  include pictures of trees for the children to reference and study what  they see. Natural materials children collect such as leaves; acorns, pinecones, etc. will be use in this activity as well.

Pretend Play-Apple Orchard: The Dramatic Play center will be transformed into an apple orchard. Students will be able to explore apples with their senses.

Art-Leaf Rubbings:The teacher will provide various leaves from trees in the neighborhood.  The children will Place a piece of paper over a leaf and rub the side of a crayon over the paper. The teacher will invite children to consider why this happens.

Science-Feely Box:A feely will be added to the science center.  Students are invited to put their hands in the holes of the box and identify the object using only their sense of touch.

Math-Sorting: Students will be able to sort objects by color, size, shape, and texture.

Library-Artists: The teacher will add books about art and artists and invite children to look at the books with another child and discuss what they see. The teacher will ask them to tell their partners what they see in the book and discuss what they like and dislike about the artwork.

Writing- Gel Writing: The teacher will be filled with hair gel and securely sealed. Students will be encouraged to use their finger to practice drawing and writing on the surface of the bags.

Sensory- Sand and water, or play-doh.
