Week of February 20th!
Theme for the Unit:
Light!
Enduring understandings
that the student should have by the end of the unit:
• There are
many types of lights in our homes and our cities.
• Light helps
us see and stay warm.
• Light helps
plants grow.
• When there is little or no
light it is dark. Shadows appear when an object blocks light.
Lessons and Activities For Learning Centers
Blocks-Students are invited to explore how they might use blocks and a
flashlight to create shadow letters. How can they build structures that will
produce a letter shadow?
Pretend Play-The teacher will add a basket of sunglasses to the Dramatic
Play Center. Talk with the children about when and why they might wear
sunglasses.
Art-The teacher will provide tissue paper and contact paper and
Invite children to use the tissue paper to create designs and place them on the
contact paper. The teacher will encourage children to note the effect sunlight
has on the art.
Science- Students will be able to sort animals into the two categories
of nocturnal vs. diurnal.
Math-Students will be able to match shape manipulative with their
shadow and make AB and ABC patterns.
Library-
My Shadow:
The teacher will write out
the poem, My Shadow, by Robert Louis Stevenson. Post it in the library, read it
to the children and refer to it throughout the unit.
Writing/Technology-
Letters with Holes:
The children are going
to use a hole punch with the teacher's assistance to create letters
on pieces of paper. Children will place the papers over a flashlight and
explore the letters and light.
Sun, Moon and Stars:
Use a search engine to find
satellite pictures of the sun, moon and various stars. The teacher is going to
show the children how to find a few letters on the keyboard as you use
them.
Sensory- Add liquid watercolors to create dark water and non-toxic
glow sticks and invite the children to explore.
