Week of January 30, 2023

  

WEEKLY REMINDERS

 

  

·      Dismissal will be at 12:00 noon on Friday, February 10th. The doors will open at 11:45am 

·      There is no after-school program on Friday, February 10th

·      Parent-teacher conferences will be on Friday, February 10th from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm. 

·      In-person meetings 1pm-2:45pm.  Virtual meetings 3pm-5:45pm 

·      Valentine's Day Assemblies Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at 9:30.

            Unit Topic

                          Transportation  

  Essential Question for the Unit:

How does my community use various modes of transportation? 

 

Focus Question for this Week 

How are various modes of transportation similar and different?

 

 

Focused Learning Activity for the Week:

 

Transportation graph

 

The teacher will provide various pictures of vehicles and modes of transportation. A graph will be created with three separate headings, “Air,” “Land,” and “Water”

The children will be invited to place their transportation pictures in the appropriate category. The children will be encouraged to count the number of pictures, and compare quantities using words like least, most, and equal.

 

Differentiation: For all children to be successful multiple entry points will be taken into consideration to meet individual students’ needs.  For example, repeat directions, extend time, adapt materials, preview questions, and provide 1:1 support.

 

For children who need additional support:

The teacher will show these children the chart beforehand and model placing a few pictures on the chart. Have them practice and give them a familiar card for the whole group activity.

For children who are ready for a challenge: 

the teacher will challenge these children to think of a mode of transportation that is not provided.

 

Children whose home language is a language other than English:

The teacher will provide the activity in the child’s native language.

 

Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed:

 

PK. MATH.6. [NY-PK.CC.5.] Recognizes whether the number of objects in one group is more than, fewer than, or equal to (the same as) the number of objects in another group (e.g., using matching and counting strategies)

 

Foundational Text for the Week

I Really Want to See You, Grandma! By Taro Gomi The link to the foundational text HERE!

             

 Questions that will be asked throughout the week related to the foundational text: 


Level 1: Recall

   Who did Yumi want to see? 

   Who did Grandma want to see?

   What were some of the vehicles Yumi and Grandma used when they tried to see each other?

 

  Level 2: Skill/Concept

    What happened when Yumi and Grandma tried to see each  

    other? How do you think Yumi felt the first time she got to

    Grandma’s house, but Grandma wasn’t there?How do you think 

Yumi felt the second time she got to Grandma’s house, but Grandmas wasn’t there? How do you think Yumi felt when she finally met Grandma under the tree?

 

 Level 3: Strategic Thinking
Why do you think Grandma and Yumi wanted to see each other? Who are some of the people you like to see? Why do you like to see them?

 

 Level 4: Extended Thinking
When Yumi got to Grandma’s house, Grandma wasn’t there but someone else was. When Grandma got to Yumi’s, Yumi wasn’t there but someone else was. Who do you think those other people were?

Yumi and Grandma passed each other many times when they were trying to see each other. How could they have prevented this problem in the first place?


Lessons and Activities for the Week:

 Blocks- Students are invited to create a variety of ramps and use different vehicles to race, predicting which one will go down the fastest and why. 

 

Pretend Play- Pretend Play will be transformed into an airport. Students are invited to create an airplane using large pieces of cardboard.  

 

Art-Make a Vehicle:

The teacher will provide recycled materials (e.g., boxes, empty and clean food containers) as well as tape and/or glue and invite children to build vehicles. Provide pictures of vehicles for the children to reference and encourage them to develop a plan for the building before they begin. Have them consider what they will make and what materials they will need.

 

Science-Paper Airplanes:

the teacher will provide simple directions for folding a paper airplane and invite children to try to fold their own. Encourage the children to explore how they might make the airplanes fly

 

Math- Students will be invited to match numbered cars to the corresponding amount of people each car holds. 

 

Library- Students have been invited to sequence the pictures and retell a familiar story, using a felt board.

 

Writing- Students will be invited to match lettered cars to their corresponding spots in a "parking lot".

 

Sensory- Students will be able to play with their own individual containers of play-doh and sand.

Focused Learning Activity for the Week:

 

Airport

  

The teacher will work with students in the pretend play area, creating materials that we can find at an airport.  The teacher will ask students to think of things they can find at an airport after showing children pictures.  The teacher will then ask students how they think we can build these materials for our pretend play area.  Students will paint and build materials to transform pretend play into an airport.

For children who need additional support: The teacher will work 1:1 with these children or in a smaller group.

The teacher will provide the activity in the child’s native language.

 Level 1: Recall

 What does the girl leave on the train?

 Where is the little girl going when she leaves Teddy on the train? Who takes the girl to find Teddy?

 

  Level 2: Skill/Concept
 Why do you think the girl was so sad about losing Teddy?

 Have you ever lost anything special? How did that feel?

 Did you ever lose something special and then get it back later? How did that feel?

 

 Level 3: Strategic Thinking
 There were many, many things at the lost property office. Why do you think there were so many things there? How do the things people leave on the train get to the lost property office?

 

 Level 4: Extended Thinking
There were lots of glasses, umbrellas, hats, and teddy bears at the lost property office. Why do you think were so many of these items there? What types of things might be easy to leave on the train? What types of things might be harder to leave on the train? Why?
