WEEKLY REMINDERS


Monday, February 25th.There will be a 12:00 
p.m. dismissal.
Friday, March 1st will be Dr. Seuss Dress Up Day and Costume Contest.  Students are invited to dress up like their favorite Dr. Seuss character.

Unit Topic:

Transportation 

     Essential Question for the Unit:

How does my community use various modes of transportation?

     Focus Question for this Week:

How do we stay safe when using transportation?
  
Focused Learning Activity for this Week:

 The teachers will work with students in the math center.  They will provide students with transportation manipulative.  Students will be encouraged to sort the transportation manipulative by color and type.  Students will then be asked, "Who operates this vehicle?" as the teacher holds up one of the manipulative.


         Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard addressed:
PK.CKW.2 (Measurement and Data): Sort objects and count the number of objects in each category.

Foundational text for the week:

Whose Vehicle is This? by Sharon Katz Cooper

Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard addressed: 
PK.CLL.10 (Reading Standards for informational Text): With prompting and support, actively engage in-group reading activities with purpose and understanding

 Questions that will be asked throughout the week: 
  
Level 1: Recall
What are some of the vehicles you noticed in this book? Who drives these vehicles?
What does a locomotive do?
 Level 2: Skill/Concept
Where are some places we see vehicles? 
How do vehicles move?
Some people ride bicycles. Where would you like to go on a bicycle?
 Level 3: Strategic Thinking
How people stay safe when driving vehicles?
Why do you think some vehicles have (wings, wheels, lights, etc.)?
Why don’t all vehicles have (wings, wheels, lights, etc.)?
 Level 4: Extended Thinking
Firefighters need to reach a fire quickly so no one gets hurt. What other drivers and vehicles need to move quickly?
Fire engines have flashing lights and loud sirens. What are some other vehicles that have flashing lights and loud sirens? Why?

Learning Centers Available for the Unit: 

Blocks- Students are invited to create a variety of ramps and use different vehicles to race, predicting which one will go down the fastest and why. 

Pretend Play- Pretend Play will be transformed into an airport. Students are invited to create things we can find at an airport using large pieces of cardboard.  

Art- An assortment of shape cutouts and pictures of vehicles will be added to the center.  Students will be invited to reference the vehicles to create their own vehicles.

Science- Students are invited to create boats (with teacher support) and then will be asked to predict if their boat will float or sink, why or why not?

Math- Students will be invited to match numbered cars to the corresponding amount of people each car holds. 

Library- Students are invited to sequence the pictures and retell a familiar story, using a felt board.

Writing- Students will be invited to match lettered cars to their corresponding spots in a "parking lot".

Sensory- Sand and water, or play-doh.
