  Essential Question for the Unit:

How does my community use various modes of transportation? 

 

Focus Question for this Week

How do we stay safe when using transportation? 

 

Focused Learning Activity for the Week:

 

Make a Vehicle

 

Children will be provided with recycled materials (e.g., boxes, empty and clean food containers) as well as tape and/or glue/tinkering materials to encourage children to build vehicles. The teacher will provide pictures of vehicles for the children to reference and encourage them to develop a plan for the building before they begin. Have them consider what they will make and what materials they will need.

 

Differentiation:  Multiple entry points will be considered for all children to be successful.  For example, repeat directions, extend time, adapt materials, preview questions, and provide 1:1 support.

 

For children who need additional support: The teacher will provide 1:1 support for children to create their vehicle. 

 

For children who are ready for a challenge: Children will be allowed to work independently on their while providing support if needed. 

 

Children whose home language is a language other than English: The teacher will provide the activity in the child’s native language.

  

 

Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed:

 

 PK.SCI.11. [K-2-ETS1-2.] Develops a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.

 

Foundational Text for the Week

Go! Go! Go! Stop! By Cherise Mericle Harper Link to story           

  

 Questions that will be asked throughout the week related to the foundational text: 

Level 1: Recall

What was Little Green’s first word?

What did the trucks do when Little Green said, “Go? Why did this become a problem?

 

Level 2: Skill/Concept

Why was Little Red important?

Why was Little Yellow important?

 

Level 3: Strategic Thinking

Little Green, Red, and Yellow made a traffic light. What are some other traffic signals or signs you see outside?

What do traffic lights do?

Why is it important to follow traffic lights and signals?

 

Level 4: Extended Thinking

Little Green and Little Red were opposites. Name some other things that are opposites. Little Green, Little Yellow, and Little Red had to work together to help with the construction of vehicles. What are some things you can do with other children to help keep the classroom happy and safe?

 

Lessons and Activities for the Week:

 Blocks- Students are invited to create a variety of ramps and use different vehicles to race, predicting which one will go down the fastest and why. 

 

Pretend Play- Pretend Play will be transformed into an airport. Students are invited to create an airplane using large pieces of cardboard.  

 

Art-Make a Vehicle:

The teacher will provide recycled materials (e.g., boxes, empty and clean food containers) as well as tape and/or glue and invite children to build vehicles. Provide pictures of vehicles for the children to reference and encourage them to develop a plan for the building before they begin. Have them consider what they will make and what materials they will need.

 

Science-Paper Airplanes:

the teacher will provide simple directions for folding a paper airplane and invite children to try to fold their own. Encourage the children to explore how they might make the airplanes fly

 

Math- Students will be invited to match numbered cars to the corresponding amount of people each car holds. 

 

Library- Students have been invited to sequence the pictures and retell a familiar story, using a felt board.

 

Writing- Students will be invited to match lettered cars to their corresponding spots in a "parking lot".

 

Sensory- Students will be able to play with their own individual containers of play-doh and sand.

·      Dismissal will be at 12:00 noon on Friday, February 10th. The doors will open at 11:45am 

·      There is no after-school program on Friday, February 10^th

·      Parent-teacher conferences will be on Friday, February 10th from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm. 

·      In-person meetings 1pm-2:45pm.  Virtual meetings 3pm-5:45pm

Focused Learning Activity for the Week:

 

The teacher will read a Donald Crews book based on child’s choice. The teacher will share the title of the book, the author’s name as well as the illustrator. The teacher will ask the children what they think the book is about.  The teacher will pause throughout the book to ask the questions suggested in Section VI: Inquiry and Critical Thinking Questions for Foundational Texts.

For children who need additional support: The teacher will read a small selection of pages rather than the entire book.

 

For children who are ready for a challenge: Children will be invited to create their own books in the writing center about vehicles and their drivers.

There are many pictures in this book and only a few words. That means I used the pictures to tell this story and there are many different ways we could tell the story. Let’s take a look at some of the pages and tell a partner what we think could be happening

Ferry boats do not need to turn around because the back becomes the front. What other vehicles don’t need to turn around? What are some vehicles that do need to turn around?
